Instructor: Tom Lavin

In this era of opioid addiction, the twelve steps of Alcohol Anonymous can give us a paradigm for healing. Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholic’s Anonymous, had a connection with Carl Jung, which sowed the seed for AA.

Dr. Lavin will discuss Jung’s understanding of the many forms of spirit and the ways in which Twelve Step Programs can support the re-discovery of the creative spirit. Dr. Lavin will also discuss the shadow of Twelve Step Programs which has the ability to snuff out the spirit which thirsts for wholeness. In their worst form, some Twelve Step Programs can be the greatest enemy of sobriety. In their best form, they can be the meeting places and transforming containers for the ecstasy of youth and the wisdom of the old woman and old man.

In this lecture Dr. Lavin will discuss sobriety as a process of remembering one’s Self by loving the body, finding the soul, and accepting the embrace of one’s creative spirit. To grow in sobriety means letting go of dependence and co-dependence and walking a path which liberates the heart.
